When riding in mountainous terrain, especially on backcountry trails or in areas without sufficient avalanche reports, being equipped in case of a potential incident is necessary. Although rare, having the proper equipment can reduce the danger and time it takes to get to those affected. Riders should, at the very least, always have an avalanche shovel at the ready.
